8-1 |
Team: Bob and Jo Debbie
and James Fiona and John
Rare away win despite playing with colourful yellow plastics, Ash Green 2 is
a new team with an age range of 14 to 68 ! We won the first 3 rubbers fairly
easily; their first pair then began to play rather better taking both their
remaining matches to 3 and eventually winning the final rubber. Good to see
a couple of teenagers playing even though they were not quite ready for
matches yet, they at least will get better unlike our ageing team, Jo apart.
Bob and Jo only conceded 25 points in the entire match, well played both.
Debbie and James won all three. Fiona and John somehow managed not to win
the final rubber despite taking the middle game 15-5, must be the pressure
of joint captaincy ! |

Team: Bob and Fiona
Debbie and Glyn JJ and John
Fiona and Bob won all 3, despite "easing up" (their view!!) in their final
rubber and going to 3
JJ and John won 2 albeit their last was by default due to an ankle injury
to the opposition lady
Debbie and Glyn picked up 1 but were very close in their final rubber
losing 17-16 in the third.
A good result against a team that had come down from the division above
Many thanks to Tricia D for her "professional" help with the injury. |

Team Debbie and Bob
(2-1) Tricia and Glyn (0-3) Mary and John (3-0)
A very tight match that did not finish until 10 past 10 with Debbie and
Bob "playing to the crowd" by going to 3 and finally triumphant at 15-12
to the huge relief of all those watching.
Tricia and Glyn went close in their first match and put in plenty of
effort in their other rubbers but in the end were not able to gain a win.
Mary and John won all 3 despite taking the best part of an hour to win the
first rubber 15-9 in the third against their 3rd pair !
Many thanks to Mary for helping out in the absence of Fiona.

Debbie and Bob (2-1), Fiona and John (1-2), JJ and Glyn (1-2)
Very close match with Fiona and John finally losing the deciding rubber
17-14 in the third at 10.40 pm....the crowd could barely watch,
fortunately the bar was still just open. |

Team
Fiona and Bob (2-1), JJ and John (1-2), Tricia and Glyn (1-2)
Another one down to the wire with JJ and John failing to pick up the
deciding rubber losing 15-6, 17-14 having been ahead for most of the game.
Bit of a pattern emerging must do better next time as we could have won
both these last matches with a bit more luck or application.
Thanks to Tricia for standing in at short notice |

Lost 3-6 |
Team: Mary & Bob (3-0), Fiona & John (0-3), JJ & Glyn (0-3)
Almost another typical 5-4 loss with both JJ & Glyn and Fiona & John
taking a rubber to three only to not quite succeed. The result was not
helped by an injury to JJ (get well soon) which meant we had to give away
a rubber 15-0, 15-0. The opposition was significantly younger than our
team, not difficult I know.
Mary & Bob showed they were all beatable despite going to three twice,
well played both.
After a good start to the season we have now lost the last three
matches to teams only marginally better than us, only one team left to
play to reach mid season, now would be a good time to show we can compete.
Perhaps Santa can provide some inspiration !!
Thanks again to Mary for standing in at short notice after Jo failed "a
late fitness test" having overdone her return to club on Wednesday. |

Lost 3-6 |
Team: Debbie & Bob (1-2), Fiona & Glyn (1-2), Jo & John (1-2)
Once again we lost but a number of the rubbers were close with both Debbie
& Bob and Jo & John going to 3 against the same pair before losing out.
Even John's flawed attempt to put the opposition off by deigning to call a
foul serve failed to alter the result although it did provoke an
interesting debate !!
Well that's half way through our season
played 7, won 3, lost 4 very middle of the table performance, can only get
better.
Thanks to Jo for standing in for JJ who is
still hobbling on her injured knee, she hopes to be full fit again after
Christmas. |
| CHA |

Won 5-4 |
Team:
Fiona & John (2-1), Mary & Glyn (1-2), Jo & Harry (2-1)
Mixed 3 were decimated by injury and unavailability so we raided Mixed 2
to borrow Harry, Mary and Jo.
CHA had also strengthened their team, probably seeing us as a possible
win situation following our recent run of losses. Their best pairing
playing as 2nd pair proceeded to win all 3 despite a valiant attempt by
Glyn & Mary who took them to 3 before losing to 10 in the deciding game.
We all managed to beat their 3rd pair relatively easily leaving the
games against the 1st pair to decide the outcome, again Glyn & Mary went
to 3 only to lose out 15-12 after a long battle. Perhaps they tired them
out as both Fiona & John and then Harry & Jo won in straight sets having
won their opening games 15-13 and 17-14 respectively.
In the end it was a much needed win after a succession of disappointing
losses. Well played all and many thanks to "Mixed 2" for the temporary
loan of half a team.
Mixed 3 injury news .....JJ is on the mend and "back in training" Bob
is fully strapped up (or is that clapped out) but insisting on playing on
despite two dodgy knees, heroic or what... answers on a post card to ... |

Won 8-1 |
Team:
Fiona & John (3-0), Tricia H & Glyn (2-1), Debbie & Bob (2-1)
A welcome easier match following our inability to turn out a team for the
previous away game. As first pair Debbie and Bob showed the way beating
their firsts to 10 and 6 setting the tone for the match.
The Ash Green second and third pairs both included teenage girls who
will doubtless get better whilst we all fade away but at present are not
really ready for league action, we all beat them in straight sets although
Glyn's "kindness to youth policy" nearly resulted in one of the rubbers
going to 3 before scraping home 17-14.
The remaining rubbers against their first pair both went to 3 with Glyn
& Tricia just missing out despite winning the middle game to 7, Fiona &
John managed to throw the first rubber to 8 before waking up to win 8-15,
15-11, 15-8.
With 10 matches played we have won 5 and lost 5 with 4 to play, very
middle of table performance but no chance of going down especially as we
are already in the bottom division !!
Mixed 3 injury news ...... Bob still reckons he has 20 years left in
those legs despite the heavy strapping..... and JJ is available for
matches again so things are looking up. |

Lost 0-9 |
Team:
Fiona & John (0-3), JJ & Harry (0-3), Debbie & Bob (0-3)
The result speaks for itself, we played below our ability
in sub-zero temperatures, what a wonderful venue Barkers is in the winter
only needed hanging icicles to finish off the atmosphere. The only saving
grace with the cool conditions is that we had longer to discover whether
Fiona had actually, by her own admission, forgotten to put her shorts on;
she has problems dressing herself these days poor thing. Thanks to Harry
for stepping in last minute as Mixed 3 once again found themselves short
of players. Very little of positive note to mention about this match,
Fiona & John did manage to take two of their rubbers to three but came up
second best twice, at least the "après badminton" was more entertaining
can't remember what we were laughing about but it was certainly raucous,
probably some joke at Bob's expense. |

Won 8-1 |
Team:
Fiona & John (3-0), JJ & James (2-1), Debbie & Bob (3-0)
A welcome return to "glorious victory" after the poor away
result earlier in the week.
Once again unable to field
our normal team with Glyn being unavailable and the supposed legion of
spare players being also not able to play on Friday, many thanks to James
for stepping in at the last moment.
Having only scrapped a 5-4
away win to CHA it felt good to post a comprehensive victory especially
with Mixed 1 in the hall beating their opposition 9-0.
The result consolidates our
mid table position with only 2 matches remaining.
Team News:
Despite playing Netball before the match Fiona managed to turn up properly
dressed this time, not a bib in sight. |

Team:
Debbie & John (0-3), Tricia D & James (0-3), Cathy & Harry (0-3)
This was always going to be a difficult match made worse by
a severe lack of ladies able to play. We managed to turn out a team thanks
to Tricia and Cathy but started effectively 3-0 down as Tricia is not
eligible to play for Mixed 3. With no regular pairings possible it was
more in hope than expectation that we set about trying to win 5 out of the
6 valid rubbers, there was no lack of effort but we were never in the
match losing 8 out 9 in straight sets with only Tricia and James managing
to take one of their rubbers to three. Thanks especially to Tricia, Cathy
and Harry for turning out in a lost cause, at least we avoided being
fined. |

Lost 1-8 |
Team:
Debbie & Bob (0-3), Tricia H & James (0-3), Fiona & Harry (1-2)
With both Glyn and John unavailable, James and Harry had to step in for
this final game of the season. Jubilee, as usual, fielded a young but very
strong team with an average age of about 18 compared to ours which was
considerably more!
Nevertheless, everyone gave their all and
after the first round of rubbers, we were 2-1 down with Debbie and Bob
going to 3 with their 1st pair and just being edged in the last, and Fiona
and Harry winning their rubber against their 3rd pair. Unfortunately, it
was all downhill from here with fitness and the age gap a deciding factor.
At least we kept smiling which is more than can be said for the opposition
who appeared more robotic than human.
Not a great end to the season but with the
match finishing early, we got back to Balsall Common for a couple of end
of season refreshments and some light-hearted banter to round off the
night.
Thanks to all who played this season, and
hopefully a more successful campaign next time out. |
