Bit of a late start – 8pm (!!!) Penny stood in for Debbie who was busy ringing in another match for Stratford. Thanks Pen!

Jubilee fielded a strong team – equally as strong as their 1st team who we played the week before. Unfortunately, although Steve D and Louise B hit their form this night, the rest of us didn’t manage to chalk up enough rubbers to swing the match into our favour. Poor Jo had a bad back too and Steve B seemed to be away with the fairies in terms of focus. Leigh and Penny had some bright moments but lady luck seemed against us all evening. To be fair to Jubilee, they put up a spirited performance, and all with a pleasant attitude.

The first pair proved tough... Steve & Lou and Steve & Jo both took them to 3 games... Steve & Jo narrowly missing out 23 21 in a nail biting third game!

Tough match at the fun Barker Butts. Steve D & Lou B were unlucky not to force any to a rubber game, missing out 23-21 and 22-20 in two matches. Steve B & Jo Pratt started slowly, losing 21-16 in their first game, but rallied to pinch the next two 21-18 & 21-19 to get on the scoreboard. Although they beat the 2nd pair, the 3rd pair held strong to win 21-19 and 21-17 for Monsoon. Leigh and Debbie fought hard were never held enough momentum to take a game.

With several players out, this wasn’t going to be an easy fixture. The Central Sports team were experienced solid players who didn’t make many mistakes. Steve D & Lou B dominated 21-13, 21-13 against the thirds but lost in straight games against the stronger other pairs. Steve B & Penny had lots of fun playing as a scratch pair (as Jo was on holiday) and won a crazy 21-16, 21-13 against 1st pair who just couldn’t seem to cope with our style. They chalked another rubber on the board with a hard fought win over the 3rds. Jon & Lou T, normally playing for mixed 2 played very well, taking one to 3 games, but sadly were unable to finish any off.

An outstanding team performance gave us a very impressive win at home just before the Christmas break. Steve D & Lou B had little trouble winning all 3 except against the tricky 3rds which went to 3 games but was finished off 21-17.   Leigh & Debbie were also on fire winning all 3 of their matches, taking two of them to 3 hard-fought games to get their money’s worth. Steve B & Rachel started confidently with a “just win” tactic and breezed through the first two matches in straight games.   However they fell short in the final rubber when it went to 3 games and lost out 22-20 in the final game against inspired opponents who clearly didn’t want to think of the match as a wasted trip! Damn! Steve B also managed to accidentally smack the lady opponent in the head with a shuttle as he walked off court. Oops, sorry!

Outstanding home match where we managed to sneak a 5-4 win after losing 6-3 at their place.   Everyone chipped in and we managed to chalk up 5 rubbers to seal the win, before conceding some of the others.   Steve D and Lou B fought especially hard to fight back and win a 3 game thriller after losing the 1st game. Steve B & Jo won all of theirs convincingly in straight games to keep confidence high and Leigh & Debbie scored a great straight games crucial win 21-13, 22-20 against a tough 2nd pair who were probably the strongest!

The BCBC floor was absolutely awful and this was highlighted further when Debbie pulled her Achilles after first game and had to concede remaining rubbers. Monsoon 1 were also just too strong with a young England junior and plenty of experience within their team. Steve & Jo played a little below par but managed to take two to 3 games but frustratingly lost out. Matt B & Lou did well to chalk one on the board to save the whitewash, but otherwise there wasn’t much else to take from this loss! Much grumbling about our hall floor! Thanks to Matt for filling for Steve D who skipped off to play with Warwick Bears, tsk!

After a bit of a thumping against Monsoon 1, it was a relief not to see too many of the 1st team players against us for this encounter. We seemed to be better on paper, even without Leigh who was busy pantomiming for this one…nearly as bad as Steve Davoile’s excuses! Steve & Jo took all their matches in straight games with relative ease, only being slightly troubled by wiley Les and his conflicting game style. Similarly, Steve & Lou cruised for most of the time, except had one which was a 3 set battle. Finally, Matt & Debbie took great confidence from winning the final rubber of the night in 3 games! Great work and thanks again for Matt filling in!
