Team: Steve
D & Seb (2-1) Matt & Graham (0-3) Roy & Keith (0-3)
Men's 1 were edged out in a high-quality match yesterday. Everyone's first
rubber was taken to three, with Steve & Seb winning in the highest scoring
match in history, 15-17, 17-16, 17-15. They were promptly rewarded with
going straight back on to face a pair of county 4ths, whom they took the
first set off. Unfortunately the opposition were able to pick up the tempo
and win. We finished with a (relatively) simple win against Jubilee's 3rd
pair.
Matt and Graham had the pleasure of the county 4ths in their first rubber,
taking them to 3 and only just being edged out. Both looked comfortable
playing at such a high level and it was only a few small miss-hits that
were the difference. Unfortunately, it was a similar story in their other
2 rubbers, but we can all be very proud in the consistently high level of
performance they showed.
Considering this is his 4th badminton night since returning after 9 years
out, Keith put in a fantastic display, striking the shuttle very well. Roy
was close to his best and they too were only just edged out in their
rubbers. Keith has promised that he'll be able to go 'much faster' in the
coming months and I believe him!
We're not on course to win the league now, but we've shown that we can
play (and play well) at this level and I think our expectations should be
lifted to finishing in the top half of this division, rather than avoiding
the drop back down to div 2. |

Monsoon 2 |
Home |
Lost 0-9 |
Team Seb & Roy, Steve H & Matt, Graham & John Men's 1sts
battled well against last year's Premier division relegates. Three of the
rubbers went to three with Roy & Seb and Steve H & Matt almost taking a
rubber each. I've no doubt Monsoon will win the league comfortably. Many
thanks to John for stepping in at the last minute.
However, there was plenty to be positive about. We played well and kept
going throughout. |

Monsoon 3 |

Lost 4-5 |
Team: Steve D & Steve H
(2-1), Matt & Graham (2-1), Harry & John (0-3)
A big thanks to Harry and John for standing
in last minute to replace Seb who is still ill and team captain Roy who is
on holiday but seemed to have forgotten to mention this to anyone.
A very close match, with Harry and John
almost taking one in their last rubber after going to
3 games and setting in the last but
unfortunately ending up losing 14-17. We needed to take the last 2 rubbers
of the evening for a win. Both rubbers went to 3 games each with Graham
and Matt magnificently taking their rubber 17-14 in the last game, and
thinking they had won the match. But the euphoria was short lived as we
had to break the news that Steve D and Steve H had lost their rubber in
the last game by 14-17. Sorry guys. |

AT7 1 |
Home |
Won 5-4 |
Team:
Graham & Matt (2-1), Steve D & Seb (3-0), Roy & Steve H ( 0-3)
Balsall Common shaded a tactical and nervy match at the Heart of England.
We took the opening round of matches 2-1, with only Roy and Steve H
losing to AT7's best pair. Steve D & Seb won their next, but AT7 took the
next 2, leaving things at 3-all. Graham & Matt then won an excellent
rubber, but Roy and Steve lost in 3. This left a 9th rubber decider with
everyone watching intently. Fortunately it proved to be a comfortable
2-set win, met with much relief and applause. |

Regent 3 |
Home |
Lost 1-8 |
Team: Steve D & Seb (0-3), Roy & Steve
B ( 0-3), Graham & Matt (1-2) Men's firsts
were well beaten by a highly consistent Regent team. Regent 3rds lost the
first 3 games of their season, including to relegation runners AT7 1sts
and Grange. However, since then their results have been noting short of
miraculous, including beating leaders Jubilee St. Augustine's 2nds!
Unfortunately we came up against three pairs more used to the Premier
division.
Steve D and Seb took two of the pairs to 3, but a succession of
unforced errors cost them both rubbers. Steve B and Roy similarly
struggled. Where as Matt and Graham did exceptionally well to take
the 9th rubber (1st pair next time, eh lads). |
|
Monsoon 2 |
Away |
Lost 2-7 |
Team: Steve D & Seb (1-2),
Matt & Steve
B ( 1-2), Roy & Harry (0-3) Men's 1sts
were beaten by the excellent Monsoon 2nds on Thursday.
Monsoon's first two pairs were too good and won all their rubbers. The
only joy came from an under-strength third pair (who still went from 7-14
down to 17-14 in the middle set against Steve D and Seb).
Steve B and Matt managed to score the most points. Steve D and Seb took
the longest amount of time to be beaten. Many thanks to Harry for filling
in.
We didn't expect to get too much out of this match. However, the next 4
games are all winnable. AT7 and Grange should be beaten and we've a chance
against Regent 3 and Monsoon 3 (dependant upon ringers). |

Grange |
Away |
Won 8-1 |
Team: Steve
D & Seb (3-0), Matt & Graham ( 2-1), Roy & Phil (3-1)
Men's 1 triumphed against Grange on Friday night. We went into the match
at the bottom of division 1, facing a tricky opposition, plastic shuttles
and the prospect of a ninth rubber decider. However, with last year's
league winning team back together, we delivered the goods. The first round
of rubbers all went our way and the second round saw us collect the all
important fifth rubber.
With Phil playing like he'd never been
away, Roy offering his usual words of motivation (!?!) and Matt banging
his racket on the walls (???), Grange had no answer and fell away in the
final round of rubbers (despite taking some rubbers to 3).
Off the bottom of the table, we face
another tricky, must-win, away match against AT7 in 2 weeks time.
Congratulations to everyone who played. A couple more performances like
that and we can look forward to another season of Division 1. |

AT7 1 |
Away |
Lost 3-6 |
Team: Steve
D & Seb (3-0), Matt & Graham ( 0-3), Roy & Phil (0-3)
Men's 1sts battled bravely against a well-disciplined AT7 team but came up
just short. For anyone who has yet to play at the AT7 centre, it has a
strange floor. Combined with plastic shuttles, it lead to some odd
rallies.
Several of the rubbers went to 3 and at one stage it looked like we
would sneak a 5-4 win, but the frustrating playing conditions favoured the
home side. However, it was a good effort by everyone, especially Matt &
Graham, who narrowly lost on setting in 3 in their 3rd rubber.
We now face Monsoon 3 and Regent 3 in the coming weeks, both away. Both
will be tough. Both are winnable. We've played well all season and deserve
another crack at it next season. |
|
Monsoon 3 |
Away |
Lost 2-7 |
Team: Matt
& Steve B (retired), Phil & Seb (1-2), Graham & Steve D (1-2)
Men's 1sts came up short in their crucial match last night.
Everything started so well. We'd mixed the
line up to make us harder to play against, Phil & Seb won their opening
rubber and Matt & Steve B. were holding their own against a very good
first pair. Then Steve B. slipped on a dodgy part of the floor (about 7
people lost their footing throughout the course of the match) and sprained
his ankle. 10 anxious minutes passed, but it was too sore to continue.
3-1 to the good, the next 4 rubbers went
Monsoon's way. Steve D. and Graham managed a win in 3 for the final
rubber.
With only 3 wins this season, our fate is
no longer in our own hands. We need results vs. Regent 3 and/or Jubilee 2
and hope Monsoon 3 or AT7 1 trip up. However, I'd like to think we'll go
into those matches with the same spirit and determination that we have
shown throughout this season.
Get well soon to Roy (flu) and Steve B
(ankle). |
|
Regent 3 |
Away |
Won 5-4 |
Team: Phil & Seb (1-2), Graham &
Matt (2-1), Roy & Steve D (2-1)
Men's 1sts gave their division 1 survival hopes a chance with a win over
Regent 3rds at the Bridge Sports Centre. Regent were playing 2 matches
that night and actually had to put their 3rd team out, so there were only
2 names from the team that beat us 9-0 at our place.
We won the first round of rubbers 2-1 with
unforced errors costing Phil & Seb against their best pair. The second
round also went our way with only Steve D. & Roy losing out to their first
pair. However, they made amends in the third round, claiming the fifth
rubber. Matt & Graham lost to their 1st pair and errors at crucial times
again cost Phil & Seb, narrowly losing in 3 to their third pair.
This leaves us with 4 wins and 38 rubbers
for with one game left. AT7 are on 4, 43 & 0, Monsoon 3 are on 4, 42 & 1
and Grange 3, 34 & 3. Even if other results go our way, 4 wins will not be
enough. We now face a final day decider against Jubilee 2 on Wednesday
22nd at HofE. It's a Wednesday and home, so we need a big supporting
turnout! Jubilee are already promoted and may not fancy the away trip so
we've got a great chance to emulate West Brom's miracle escape last year. |

Jubliee 2 |
Home |
Lost 2-7 |
Team:
Graham & Matt (0-3), Steve D & Seb (2-1), Roy & Steve H (0-3)
Mens 1 went into their final match of the season, knowing that only a win
would give them a credible chance of avoiding relegation to division 2.
Always a tough ask against Jubilee.
Sadly, Phil came down will flu on the
morning and Roy only found out at 6:20 PM, so it was a nervous wait to see
who would turn up. Thankfully both Bob and Steve H turned up and agreed to
play and Roy went for Steve.
Alas, it was not to be. Steve D. and Seb
took 2 rubbers and could have had the 3rd but for a short string of
unforced errors. Matt and Graham took their third rubber to three before
narrowly losing out and Steve H and Roy were edged out 17-16 in one of
their rubbers.
Barring miracles, 4 wins and 40 rubbers for
isn't going to be enough to stay in the division. We demonstrated that we
could live at this level, but inconsistency and bouts of errors cost us at
crucial times over the season.
Thanks to everyone that played over the
year. Enjoy the summer and rest up for another season in 6 months time! |
