 5.      TEAM CAPTAIN’S REPORTS

 Ladies Captain –Louise Taylor

Team: Louise Taylor, Penny Bell, Louise Baynton, Debbie Johnson

Finished: 7th

Had an enjoyable if not VERY hard season, but we held our own against most teams, and although each point was VERY hard to get, we did very well considering we came up from Div 1.

We’ll be going back down to Div 1 for next season, but we’ll just have to win the cup again and have another try! Thanks to the team for all their hard work and effort this year, and thanks to the subs who played this year too. A big well done to us all, as even though the scores don’t reflect the actual effort put in, and the fact that quite a few games were lost 21-18 etc....!!

           Mens 1 Captain –Jon Newland

Team: Tim Bartle, Steve Best, Steve Davoile, Jon Newland, Matt Seeley, Leigh Skillet

            Finished 1st won the league

Did very well won div 1 will go back up to premier.  Well done.

            Mens 2 Captain –Graham Chilvers

Team: Roy Brighton, Matt Butler, Graham Chilvers, Mark Manser, Andy Merry, John Todd

            Finished 6th

Used 13 different players, but unfortunately we could not quite stay in the division, although it was extremely close.  In fact we only went down by 1 rubber!!! Ernesford Grange tried to help us in the last match of the season but could not quite do it. To be fair we probably didn’t deserve to stay up. Thanks to everyone who played and I hope you all enjoyed yourselves. Here’s to next season.

Mixed 1 Captain – Leigh Skillett

Team: Louise Baynton, Debbie Johnson, Jo Pratt, Steve Best, Steve Davoile, Leigh Skillett

            Finished 2nd

Overall we can all be very pleased with our efforts in Mixed 1 this year.  At the start of the year the aim was to get promoted back to the Premier division, after being relegated.  We achieved promotion by coming second in the league.  The stats were briefly as follows:

End position in league – 2nd (promoted)

Wins – 9

Losses – 3 (2 away, 1 home)

Although, we got promoted there is perhaps a tinge of regret that we didn’t win the trophy.  All three of our defeats were by the score of 5-4. In addition we had two poor results in losing to St Philips away (with a couple of first team players missing) and then we lost at home to Central when we really should have won. This was borne out in the away match when we beat them 9-0. In the end we fell 2 points short of top spot. The consistent high standard was helped by the fact that we had a really settled team. Thanks to those players who did step in when needed. Special mention must also go to Steve Best and Jo Pratt, who hardly lost a rubber all year. We are all now looking forward to the challenge of the Premier division.

            Mixed 2 Captain –Penny Bell

Team -Penny Bell, Gemma Johnson, Louise Taylor, Tim Bartle, Matt Butler, Jez Cooper

Finished 2ndgot promoted Monsoon won, just two points behind, very steady team.  Going up had good season, lots of players due to work commitments and injury well done to all.

Leamington Mens Captain – Ben Thompson

Team: Bharat Bhushan, James Griffiths, Mike Liu, Ben Thompson

            Finished 3rd

Struggled with plastics.  Best 2 matches were against central sports and most enjoyable.  Thanks to all who filled in look forward to next season.

Leamington Mixed Captain – Roy Brighton

Team: Joan Fuller, Debbie Griffiths, Kay Burke, Roy Brighton, Mark Manser, John Todd

            Finished 3rd

Won 8 lost 4.  Not too keen on playing with plastics, in terms of rubbers, not too well won more   13 played in total.  15 different pairs.  Lots jumped in to help out

School Hall – Roy broached the subject of having played at this venue for over 20 years, did we have any preferential treatment as the lights and floor are not the best.  It was decided that we would not get any better service elsewhere and the A one-off payment to the Council to help fund this was considered to fix the lights, but this would probably cost more than we have in the bank.

Can the Fixtures Secretary not schedule matches 11-16 March (Yonex All Open)

As it is difficult to get volunteers to become committee members, a way around this is to give

honoraria in the form of discount on subs.

Proposal:

Treasurer and Secretary:                50%

Fixtures Secretary:                           30%

Others Committee members:         20%

3    Chairperson’s report

Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to all the committee members for their efforts over the last year, and it would be remiss of me not to thank them personally.

Firstly thanks to Julie for all of her efforts as Secretary and keeping the Team Captain’s organised with the Team packs.

Secondly, to Phil in his seventh and last year as Match Secretary, another very well organised season. I would like to put on record my thanks to him for his sterling efforts even after he gave up playing.

And to Louise T for her work as Treasurer and Social Secretary, it’s not an easy job but every club needs somebody to undertake the task of Treasurer, a vitally important job.

Thanks also to Steve D as New Members Sec – he still gets emails and requests to attend club – some more successful than others.

Thanks also go to the Team Captains, well done to you all.

And finally thanks very much to all members for their efforts over the year, without you there would not be a club.

Well another season has come to an end. I hope that most of you had an enjoyable, if hard, season.

We have had a very up and down season – highs and lows. I will start with the lows – unfortunately we have two teams who will go down. Ladies had an interesting introduction to Premier level badminton last year, and Mens 2 after going up to Division 2 could not quite stay up. But on the opposite side of the coin we have won 1 cup – Mens 1 have won Division 1 and will go up to Premier again next year.

And our two Mixed teams have both been promoted in second place.

The two Leamington teams did exceptionally well and both came third in their respective divisions, just missing out on promotion. Well done to both captains – Ben and Roy.

Also we have members who have won tournament trophies in the name of Balsall Common, the CET Cup in the Coventry league (Debbie J, Jo, Leigh and Steve B) and the Jane Forde competition in the Leamington League (Jo, Zo-Dee, Leigh and Steve B). Well done to you all.

And I would finally like to say a thank you to everybody in the club for all of their efforts this year, and here’s to next season.
